Police forces publish new street-level crime data monthly, usually with a one to two month lag while records are finalised. SafeWalk UK refreshes its data every month.
Geographic detail and limitations
To protect privacy, police data pins each crime to an anonymised map point near where it happened rather than an exact address, so locations are approximate. Coverage is limited to England and Wales; Scotland and Northern Ireland are not included.
How crimes are classified
Crimes are grouped using the Home Office categories used by all forces, including anti-social behaviour, burglary, robbery, vehicle crime, violence and sexual offences, drugs, public order, shoplifting and criminal damage.
